Aparecida advances in the production of a documentary about the history of the Manaus samba school

The documentary shows everything from the creative process to post-carnival, highlighting the team’s work behind the scenes

Manaus (AM) – The documentary “FAITH IN CULTURE – Behind the Scenes of the Aparecida Carnival”, is in full swing. Directed by Leandro Xavier, the audiovisual material is a work covered by the Paulo Gustavo Public Notice and is scheduled to be released after carnival, in Manaus and on various digital platforms.

The audiovisual work narrates the work carried out by artists, collaborators and technical staff, in the construction of the carnival of one of the most traditional samba schools in the capital, GRES Mocidade Independente de Aparecida, founded in 1980.

Leandro says that the inspiration for the documentary came in 2020, the year in which he began to have more contact with the carnival routine.

“It became an everyday thing, because from 2020 onwards, I started living opposite the school and listening to the drums rehearsing. All of this helped me create a scenario in my head that it was necessary to tell this routine”,

At Xavier’s invitation, filmmaker Cleber Maia is part of the team, in a valuable production about the activities that bring carnival to life.

“Receiving the invitation directly from Leandro to participate in the documentary about the Mocidade Independente Samba School of Aparecida was a surprise for me and also an honor. A few years ago I participated in an audiovisual project with him, approved by the Ministry of Culture. This reunion to immerse ourselves in the religious and popular tradition here in the neighborhood is undoubtedly a privilege.”

Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Mocidade Independente de Aparecida is a samba school in the city of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. It was founded on March 15, 1980 and is the biggest carnival winner in its city, with 24 titles.

About the documentary

The recordings have already started in the pre-carnival period, with preparations since June 2023. The school’s parade on Avenida do Samba, the emotion, energy, beauty and creativity of the group will also be recorded and documented in the work, as well as post-carnival, celebrations, awards, evaluations and plans for next year.

The documentary is made with resources from the Paulo Gustavo Law via the Ministry of Culture and the Federal Government, with the State Council of Culture – Conec and the Government of the State of Amazonas as sponsors.

The audiovisual work will last 80 minutes, and will be distributed free of charge in public schools, universities and throughout Manaus. Furthermore, it will be available on free access digital platforms, showing the construction of the carnival of the Mocidade Independente de Aparecida samba school and its relationship with faith and community to the general public.
