The ANP (National Petroleum Agency) tightened the siege this year at fuel stations and resellers in the face of growing adulteration with methanol, a highly toxic substance that, when exposed to temperatures of 12 degrees, releases vapors that can cause blindness and even kill when inhaled.

In the first half of this year, 8,124 inspections were carried out at retail stations in the country, with 31 cases of apprehensions for sales with methanol concentrations above 0.7% in ethanol, diesel and gasoline. In the worst case, the concentration was 97.7%.

In the same period last year, the ANP carried out 7,369 actions and made six seizures – the majority involved ethanol with very high concentrations of methanol, but there were also cases with regular gasoline.

“The agency identified non-compliant fuel (outside quality standards) with the presence of methanol, which led to more intense inspection activities,” the ANP said in a note.

Despite this, the agency claims that the quality of fuel sold on national networks follows international standards.
