Ancelotti reveals that the Brazilian team was the second option – 02/01/2024 – The World Is a Ball

Carlo Ancelotti, 64, spoke openly for the first time about the possibility of leading the Brazilian national team.

And his speech brings the conclusion that Brazil, at least in his own view, does not have the prestige it once had: it has become a second option.

Real Madrid’s Italian coach admitted that he had conversations with the management of the CBF (Brazilian CBF Confederation) and that he was invited, but declared that the arrangement depended on Real Madrid.

For those who understand, the message is this: Ancelotti would agree to take over the Brazilian team, as long as Real did not want to extend the contract it had with him, which would end in the middle of this year.

Because last week the renewal took place.

The club from the Spanish capital, which leads the national championship, announced that the four-time Champions League champion (twice ahead of Milan, twice with Real) will remain in the team until 2026.

“The truth is that I had contact with the Brazilian team, with the person who was its president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, who I thank for his affection and interest in me coaching Brazil, which made me proud,” said Ancelotti in an interview the day before of Real Madrid x Mallorca, for the Spanish Championship.

“But everything depended on Real Madrid’s decision,” he continued. “Ednaldo is no longer president [foi afastado em decisão judicial] and in the end it happened as I always wanted: staying at Real Madrid. The club decided [renovar] because he’s happy with my work.”

“I don’t know if Brazil will want me in 2026 and I don’t know if they are satisfied with my decision”, concluded the Italian, indicating that he will be able to manage the national team after the new contract with Real ends.

The CBF is certainly not satisfied, as Ancelotti was the bet for Brazil to regain the FIFA Cup in 2026.

The team has not won the World Cup since 2002. It failed with Carlos Alberto Parreira in 2006, with Dunga in 2010, with Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2014 and with Tite, twice (in 2018 and in 2022).

With interims (first Ramon Menezes, then Fernando Diniz), Brazil had a terrible 2023 and is in sixth place (among ten countries) in the World Cup qualifiers, which will take place in two years in three venues: USA, Canada and Mexico.

The top six in South America qualify directly for the World Cup and the seventh placed team still has a chance through a repechage.
