Economic size The value of the fines varied depending on the economic size of the company and the total number of calls fired beyond the daily limits allowed, stated Anatel. “This is the first time that Anatel has fined companies for making abusive calls and it is the beginning of a process of tightening supervision until we can effectively bring the number of massive calls in Brazil to more reasonable levels”, said advisor Artur Coimbra. According to the advisor, companies can still appeal the decisions. According to the agency, there are currently around 30 companies being investigated for making abusive calls, which may also be sanctioned. Automatic calls Anatel published a precautionary measure in June 2022 that punished companies for practicing abusive telemarketing. The rule was valid for three months and was then extended. Abusive automated calls are considered to be more than 100,000 calls made per day, lasting up to three seconds or not being completed. August was the month with the highest number of complaints — more than 3 thousand, or the equivalent of four complaints per hour.
