Amom meets with federal authorities to demand actions to combat smoke in Manaus

Brasilia DF) – Federal deputy Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM) met with authorities from federal agencies this Thursday (28), to request support for actions to combat the smoke that reaches the metropolitan region of Manaus, originating from fires in Amazonas.

The agendas took place with the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, together with the special secretary for parliamentary affairs, Valmir Prascidelli. In response to the demands, Prascidelli and Padilha stated that they would provide support in forwarding demands regarding this matter to other ministries.

At the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense, the parliamentarian was received by the deputy chief of staff, Paloma Ramos. The meeting also included the participation of the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, who stated that the State has entered into an emergency decree and is seeking resources to purchase equipment.

“Until the equipment arrives in Amazonas and is made available, the fire that takes the smoke to Manaus will probably continue to occur. We continue to fight for the federal government to provide immediate assistance,”

declared Ammon.

At the Ministry of Environment, Amom met with the minister’s chief of staff, Daniel Vasconcelos, the Secretary of Climate Change, André Lima, and Taveira. At the time, MMA representatives did not guarantee short-term actions to solve the problem in the State. However, they committed to establishing partnerships with federal environmental agencies, such as IBAMA, so that equipment is provided to the Fire Department of the State of Amazonas, necessary to combat fires.

The parliamentarian sent letters to the ministries of Environment and Sustainable Development, Health, and Regional Integration and Development, in addition to the Chico Mendes Institute for Environmental Preservation (ICMBio) and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA), to question what the prevention measures, immediate responses and recovery of areas degraded by fire outbreaks.

“The situation is unsustainable and we need a response, because I spoke with the Secretary of the Environment of the State of Amazonas who is here in Brasília, and he already told me that they do not have the capacity today, with the Fire Department there, to put an end to the fire that is occurring in the municipalities of the metropolitan region of Manaus. We need this emergency support and solve this problem”,

stated the parliamentarian in the meetings.

Manaus dawned under an intense cloud of smoke this Thursday (28), reaching the “very unhealthy” level on the “Air Quality Index Values” (AQI), a global map that indicates air quality in real time.

The State of Amazonas has also maintained its leading position in the Queimadas Program ranking, for more than 20 consecutive days. Until September 19, 5,186 fires were recorded. According to information from the Amazonas Fire Department, 1,193 fire incidents were attended to between July and September – 473 of which were in Manaus.
