The 3-1 defeat against Bahia was the final point in the history of coach Vagner Mancini in charge of América-MG.
The board announced the departure of the coach on Sunday night, shortly after the new stumble that left the team at the bottom of the Brazilian Championship, with just 10 points. There is no indication about his replacement.
Mancini couldn’t resist the last results of the season. In last place in Serie A of the Brazilian Championship, the club has not won for eight games in the main national competition, despite remaining competitive in the Copa Sudamericana.
The departure represents the end of his second spell at América-MG. Since returning in April 2022, there have been 97 games, 38 wins, 32 draws and 38 losses. In 2023, the American team was runner-up in the Campeonato Mineiro and left the Copa do Brasil in the round of 16 against Corinthians on penalties.
In addition to the last position in Serie A, América-MG has the worst defense in the competition, with 40 goals conceded in 17 matches.
Mancini arrived at América-MG in 2021. Shortly after taking office, he accepted a proposal from Grêmio, where he ended up being relegated with the Gaucho team to Série B. That year, for the Minas Gerais team, there were 21 games, seven wins, nine draws and five defeats.
In April 2022, when Mancini returned to América-MG, the club was playing in the Copa Libertadores for the first time in history. It even advanced in the preliminary stages of the continental competition, but ended up eliminated in the group stage.
