Amazonian Suan Lira defeats Paraguayan grandmaster Cubas in “Chess Exhibition”

Manaus (AM) – Strategies, precise moves and a surprising result marked the “Simultaneous” chess exhibition that took place on Sunday (15) at the “Manaus Chess Open”. The moment, which brought together the great Paraguayan master Cubas and 16 players, showed the young Amazonian Suan Lira, current Brazilian under-14 champion, emerging as the only one to defeat Cubas.

Known for his mastery on the board, Cubas faced 16 competitors simultaneously. Among them, Suan Lira, a chess prodigy who has been conquering the chess community with his unique skill and strategic cunning.

Suan’s victory over Cubas was not just a personal triumph, but a testament to the young Amazonian’s exceptional talent. Suan, who recently won the title of Brazilian champion in the under-14 category, once again demonstrated his chess prowess by overcoming an experienced opponent.

“Simultaneous is difficult for the grandmaster because he has to play with several people. And I ended up playing well. I managed to achieve this result by creating difficulties for him and ended up winning the match. It was a really cool result. I liked”,

shared Suan excitedly.

In the exhibition, Cubas beat 12 competitors, tied with three and was defeated only by Suan. The Paraguayan grandmaster emphasized the opportunity the tournament offers local players to compete with grandmasters, highlighting Suan’s brilliant potential in the world of chess.

Furthermore, Cubas praised the event, adding that the “Manaus Chess Open” is already one of the best events in the sport and features high-level players.

“It’s really cool that local players have the opportunity to play with great masters, and this championship provides that. Suan, for example, is a young man with high potential, he played a good game and won”,

Origin

While Suan, from a humble family, celebrates this significant achievement, he now faces the financial challenge of competing in the Chess World Cup in Italy, where he secured his place by winning the Brazilian championship earlier this year.

Suan is a student at Escola Estadual de Tempo Integral Elisa Bessa Freire and shares that his passion for chess began at school when his teacher, Andrey Neves, later his coach, introduced him to the world of chess. “I learned the fundamental concepts of chess in Elisa Bessa’s classes, taught by chess player Andrey Neves”, he highlights.

After classes at school, Suan dedicated himself even more at home, reading books, trying to improve his skills. He highlights his mother’s constant support for participating in tournaments, despite the family’s financial limitations.

In 2022, Suan made his debut in a national championship, where he finished fourth. This year, he achieved the long-awaited title of Brazilian chess champion in the under-14 category.

“It’s not just about studying, but about putting it into practice, and this is acquired through participation in tournaments. I have already participated in others, and this was essential for my professional growth and development”,

highlights Suan.

Tournament in Italy

Champion Suan, who recently won the national title, now faces a dilemma to participate in the international tournament in Italy. The high cost of air tickets, estimated at R$15,000 for him and his coach, is proving to be an insurmountable obstacle.

Suan expresses his burning desire to represent Brazil, especially Amazonas, in this prestigious tournament, but recognizes that the cost of the tickets is beyond his financial means. He appeals to the community for support to enable their participation and the chance to bring the trophy to the state.

It is worth mentioning that the amount required refers exclusively to tickets, since, upon winning the Brazilian championship, Suan guaranteed accommodation and food, courtesy of the organizers.

Suan’s family situation adds complexity to the scenario, as his mother, a beautician, needs to support not only the athlete, but also two other siblings, including a newborn. The financial challenge adds an additional layer of urgency to the search for community support.

“I really want to participate, represent Brazil and, of course, Amazonas in a championship of the level it will be, but the cost of tickets is high, so I need people to help me achieve my dream of participating and bringing the trophy for our state”,

he emphasized.

“Manaus Chiss Open”

The Manaus Chiss Open 2023, which is in its second edition, started on the 10th and continues until the 17th of October. The competitions take place at the Novotel hotel, located in the Distrito Industrial neighborhood, South Zone of the city.

For those who wish to follow, the event is open to the public and, this Monday (16), the 7th round of the Manaus Chiss Open Classic rhythm will take place starting at 7pm.
