The Amazon group announced that it destroyed more than six million counterfeit products in 2022 worldwide, twice the amount destroyed in 2021, according to the annual brand protection report published this Tuesday (4).

“Counterfeiters have a broad spectrum, from luxury to everyday products,” said Dharmesh Mehta, an Amazon vice president in charge of coordinating with the company’s partner sellers.

In 2020, Amazon destroyed nearly two million counterfeit products. In 2021, the number rose to three million.

Last year, the online commerce giant prevented more than 800,000 attempts to create seller accounts (up from 2.5 million in 2021 and 6 million in 2020).

“Our preventative controls work,” celebrated Amazon.

The company added that it requires very detailed information about its identity, address and bank accounts from its associated sellers. It also stated that it organizes video interviews between Amazon employees and its sellers, to verify the data.

Last year, Amazon prosecuted more than 1,300 alleged counterfeiters in the US, UK, Europe and China with the relevant authorities.

In addition, to fight counterfeiting, the company has invested more than US$1.2 billion (compared to US$700 million in 2020) and employed more than 15,000 people (including creators of artificial intelligence programs and specialized researchers).
