Representing the Brazilian delegation at Gymnasiade 2023, considered the world’s largest school sports competition, Heron Moura from Amapá won a bronze medal in wrestling in the under-85 kg freestyle category. The competition takes place in Rio de Janeiro.
“I came overweight and I came with the goal of losing weight because I had little time to train. Yesterday (Friday the 25th) was one of the worst days of my life, but today (Saturday the 26th) made up for it all with this medal, which is very important and I will keep for the rest of my life. It’s a great feeling to represent my city here at the world cup”, said the athlete.
Heron is from Macapá, a student at Colégio Equipe and is a creation of the Angelus Wrestling project. He won two fights: one against a Brazilian and an American. In the semifinals, the man from Amapá lost to a Georgian and won bronze.
In addition to Heron, Diego Duarte from Amapá also won a bronze medal in the fighting modality, in karate.
The Gymnasiade, which is considered the world’s biggest school sports competition, runs until August 27 in the city of Rio de Janeiro with archery, athletics, badminton, 3×3 basketball, boxing, karate, sports dancing, fencing, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, orienteering, paralympic swimming, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling and chess.
