Between July 6th and 8th, the Brazilian wrestling delegation won nine medals at the Pan American U20 held in Santiago, Chile. The number of medals is a record in the competition, which brings together athletes from 17 to 20 years old.
Among the medalists is João Batista Neto, from the Panda Fight Team, who won a bronze medal in the 61kg category, in Freestyle. To win the podium, the man from Amapá had to fight twice with Ecuadorian Patrick Quinto.
“We will work hard and adjust the details! Let’s go to the next ones”wrote João’s teacher, Wanderson Silva ‘Panda’, on his social networks.
João Neto competed in both fighting styles in the competition, freestyle and Greco-Roman.
From defeat to the podium
João Neto, who was in group B, ended up losing his first fight to Ecuadorian Patrick Quinto by 11 to 0 and, even with the defeat, managed to advance to the semifinal after Argentine Arnoldo Proboste withdrew. In the semifinal, the man from Amapá ended up losing to the American Nickolas Bouzakis, by the same score of 11 to 0, and went on to dispute the bronze medal.
For the podium dispute, the man from Amapá again faced the Ecuadorian Patrick Quinto. With a score of 3×1, Patrick only avoided João’s attacks, who, after attacking, managed to leave everything the same (3×3).
At first, the arbitration did not consider João’s attack, but after the Brazilian coach, Agnaldo dos Santos, requested a review of the bid, the judge awarded the score and by tiebreaker criteria (last point scored), the amapaense was declared the winner. .
