This Wednesday (31) the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) announced the call for 51 athletes and 11 guide athletes for the Paralympic Athletics World Championship in Paris, which will take place from July 8 to 17 this year. A amapaense Wanna Brito, 26 years old, was the only one from the state to be invited to compose the Brazilian delegation.
According to CPB criteria, the call for the Brazilian delegation was made based on the seven gold medalists at the Tokyo 2020 Games, the 10 athletes who obtained the A 2022 Index for the modality in competitions approved by the World Para Athletics (WPA) and 34 other competitors who were ranked worldwide in the top four places in their respective classes.
The amapaense recently broke the record of the Americas in the throw of club and shot at the Paralympic Athletics Circuit, in São Paulo. Wanna was also part of the Brazilian delegation at the Grand Prix Marrakesh 2023, where she won a gold and a silver medal.
The athlete competes in the F32 class (for athletes with severe cerebral palsy) and is currently 1st in the world ranking in the shot put and 2nd in the club throw in her class.
The World Athletics Championships in Paris will be the biggest Paralympic event in France before the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The competition will be held at Stade Charlety, a venue that has hosted stages of the sport’s Grand Prix.
Athletics is one of the most successful sports in the country. In the history of the Paralympic Games, athletics has won the most medals for Brazil, with 170 podiums in total.
