Amapá is the first state in Brazil to formalize agreements with the National Water Resources Agency – News of Brazil

The Government of Amapá and the National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation (ANA) formalized this Friday, 19, three cooperation agreements to strengthen the management of water resources in the state, which is bathed by large rivers such as the Amazon, the Araguari , Jari, Oiapoque and Amapari. The signing took place at the Northern Palace.
The agreements are the Water Governance Pact, the Program to Stimulate the Disclosure of Water Quality Data (Qualiágua) and the Drought Monitor. Each agreement has its proposals and characteristics, intensifying the integration between ANA and the Government of Amapá.
Amapá pioneerism
The Pact for Water Governance consists of an articulation between ANA, the states and the Federal District to promote cooperation and integration of actions between the agency and the federative units.
Amapá is the first State to sign this pact, which means a great advance for the State Policy on Water Resources, which will complete 21 years in June 2023, as highlighted by the CEO of ANA, Verônica Rios.
“Amapá is a symbolic state because it is bathed by a large number of mighty rivers. This abundance of water resources that exists in the Amazon needs to be transformed into clean water from people’s taps”, Veronica said.
For Governor Clécio Luís, being a pioneer is a privilege and increases the responsibility of the State. “It is important that Amapá is not only the first to sign the agreement, but also the first in governance”, he pointed out.
The Pact is made up of three components: Water Resources Management, Sanitation and Water Services, and Dam Safety. Amapá faces challenges related to these issues, such as the need to strengthen the inspection of the use of water resources, implement the national registry of water resource users and improve hydrological monitoring.
Water Quality and Drought Monitoring
Amapá’s adherence to the Qualiágua Program will allow the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema) to monitor the main water bodies in Amapá and, thus, develop policies to guarantee water quality.
Amapá is also joining the Drought Monitor, which assesses the severity of droughts based on climate indicators and short- and long-term impacts. It is a tool for regular and periodic monitoring of the drought situation throughout Brazil, through which it is possible to draw up more precise planning.
Sema’s manager, Taísa Mendonça, reinforced the commitment assumed with the signing of the pacts, emphasizing that this represents the beginning of many activities that need to be put into practice in the environmental scenario of Amapá.
“This is just the beginning of many actions that we have to carry out with great responsibility and follow-up, and we are committed to carrying them out”, emphasized the secretary.
Senator Randolfe Rodrigues participated in the pact signing ceremony and highlighted Amapá’s hydrographic potential.
“It is often said that the Amapá watershed is a basin that has its own life and autonomy, in fact, mainly due to the strategic geographic location of the mouth of the Amazon River, which is in the heart of our land. We usually say that we have the best address in the world, on the corner of the most beautiful river and the equator”, said the senator.
