With the support of the State Government, the goalball team from Amapá traveled on Monday (3rd) to compete in the Regional Center-North Championship of the modality, which starts on Tuesday (4th) and continues until July 8th, in Brasilia.
The team, made up of four para-athletes and two coaches, trained throughout the month of June on the multi-sport court at the State University of Amapá (Ueap). “We have very good expectations. We are confident in the training we did to arrive at the competition firm and strong to represent our state well”, said para-athlete Alessandro Figueiredo.
The Goalball Center-North Regional is carried out by the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the Visually Impaired. In 2022, the team from Amapá was in the group stage, but this year, the athletes want to go further in the competition.
“The team is well trained and we managed to maintain last year’s base. The competition is selective, so the expectation is that we will get a place to compete in the Brazilian Championship, which will take place in the second half of this year”explained coach Rodrigo Ikegami.
Goalball
Goalball is a Paralympic team sport played only by the visually impaired. The object of the game is to throw a ball with your hands so that it reaches the opponent’s goal.
The ball, about the size of those used in basketball, has bells inside. It is the sound of these small bells that guides the athletes, and only when the ball leaves the pitcher’s hands is it possible for the defense to determine which type of release was chosen.
