Politicians demand reform of the highway, which also serves as an alternative to alleviate the impacts of the drought in the state

Manaus (AM) – The Amazon bench once again made harsh criticisms of the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva (Rede), due to issues of impasse regarding the paving of BR-319, which connects Amazonas to the rest of the country. Senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) even claimed that if someone goes hungry, it is the minister’s fault. “For I declare that, if any Amazonian goes hungry, the culprit is Minister Marina Silva, who out of vanity does not allow the recovery of BR-319 and sentences Amazonas to isolation”.

The criticism occurred on Tuesday night (26), during a meeting of the Amazonas bench with the ministers of Transport, Renan Filho, and of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, to discuss emergency actions related to the drought that is hitting the State. During the meeting, Omar reaffirmed the importance of investments in infrastructure, especially in BR-319, which is in precarious conditions and criticized the actions of the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva.

“I condemn her for causing my State to become isolated. It has no environmental proposals for Brazil. He only knows how to say ‘can’t’ and ‘shouldn’t’. I am accusing Marina Silva of being responsible for the isolation of my State, of the people of Amazonas”,

concluded the senator.

On his social networks, the senator added that it is not new that Amazonas is in a battle in defense of the restructuring of BR-319.

“Today, with strong climate changes that are punishing Amazonas with one of the biggest droughts in history, there is a risk that part of the population in my state will suffer from shortages of food, fuel and other items”,

declared.

“For I declare that, if any Amazonian goes hungry, the culprit is Minister Marina Silva, who out of vanity does not allow the recovery of BR-319 and sentences Amazonas to isolation”,

added Omar Aziz.

Senator Eduardo Braga (MDB) stated that it was impossible to contain the anger of seeing the impact of the drought on the Amazonian people and the impassable situation of the BR-319. Braga declared that the highway, if it were capable of traffic, would alleviate the impacts of the drought in the state.

“If the only land access between the capital of Amazonas and the rest of Brazil were properly paved, as we have been demanding for a long time, we would not see thousands of Amazonians face so many social, economic and environmental difficulties, which end up worsening due to the drought”,

also criticized the parliamentarian.

Eduardo Braga highlighted that the fault for the failure to advance the highway is due to a series of environmental obstacles, in addition to the withdrawal of recovery from the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC).

Federal deputy Alberto Neto (PL), who has criticized Marina Silva since taking on the Environment portfolio and demands for the release of the construction of BR-319, recalled the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, where “trucks loaded with oxygen they were unable to cross the road due to the unfortunate situation they are in.”

“Today our people suffer, Minister Marina, they suffered during the pandemic. You saw the images, the horrors of the trucks trying to reach the city of Manaus and many died because of it. Many died because of this excessive, Shiite environmental policy that has isolated the people of Amazonas”,

complained the politician.

The deputy also made statements stating that Amazonas is the most coveted region in Brazil, however, it is its poorest region, because it remains isolated from the rest of the country without the necessary structure for land transport, in this case, BR-319.

Drought in rivers

The points on the Solimões and Madeira rivers that will initially receive dredging works are fundamental waterways through which inputs enter and finished products leave for the Manaus Free Trade Zone. Dry rivers also impede the supply of water and food to more distant communities.

At the end of the dry period, the projection of the Civil Defense of the State of Amazonas is that 59 of the 62 municipalities will be in an Emergency Situation, directly affecting around 500 thousand people due to the influence of El Niño, which inhibits the formation of clouds of rain and prolongs the drought.
