On World Press Freedom Day, this Wednesday night (07.06), it was launched by the National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ), the Union of Professional Journalists in the State of Amazonas (SJP/AM) and Institutions of Higher Education (IES) the Amazonas Committee for the Defense of the PEC of the Diploma, with journalist Islânia Lima as its coordinator.
At the event held via the Zoom meeting application, professional journalists, journalism course coordinators from the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), Boas Novas, Martha Falcão and Nilton Lins colleges, academics and students had the opportunity to discuss opinions and give suggestions on the current topic of total relevance to the entire category.
The virtual meeting also featured the special guest, professor and doctor, Ivânia Vieira, who spoke to everyone on the theme “Journalism and Social Responsibility” and highlighted the importance of valuing the profession in the current context in Brazil.
“We emphasize that this is a campaign that should receive support not only from journalism professionals and students, but from society as a whole. From 2009 to the present date, we have seen and followed how negative the withdrawal of the diploma requirement for journalists to practice professionally was. The time has come to re-establish this requirement to guarantee rights and value the production of content, respect for ethics and, with that, provide quality services to the population”,
reinforces the president of the SJP/AM, Wilson Reis.
From now on, the committee will go through a program creation process, for an immediate start to actions that can mobilize the whole society, as well as trained journalists and undergraduate students.
For the coordinator of the Amazonas Committee of the Pec do Diploma, journalist Islânia Lima, the agenda is of paramount importance for everyone.
“For 14 years we have seen many injustices happening to our profession, which has literally been trivialized and mocked by society as a whole. Journalism is something serious and that needs to be respected and executed ethically, technically and with the truth, this we all gain and society too, especially with the appreciation of the professional in the environments in which he operates”,
declared.
Parliamentary support scoreboard
Equally important in the mobilization of teachers, civil servants and students for the success of the campaign actions carried out by the 31 Unions and the National Federation of Journalists – Fenaj, is the support of the eight parliamentarians who make up the Amazonian bench of the Chamber of Deputies, in the National Congress, in Brasilia.
To monitor the development of this campaign in the state, the SJPAM created a map of how deputies vote. Up to the present date, political support for the PEC has been recorded, after statements by their respective advisors. Deputies Sidney Leite (PSD); Átila Lins (PSD) and Amom Mandel (Citizenship) have already declared their support for PEC 206/12, known as PEC do Diploma.
The coordination of the campaign in Amazonas awaits with positive expectation that the other parliamentarians can also declare their votes. This is because the measure has a supra-partisan character. The reestablishment of the diploma requirement – already approved in the Federal Senate – rescues the dignity of thousands of journalists in their daily practice for the benefit of journalism and society.
