Allies move to occupy Dino’s political space in Maranhão – 12/02/2023 – Panel

The appointment of Minister Flávio Dino (Justice and Public Security) to a vacancy in the STF (Supreme Federal Court) anticipated the moves to occupy the political space left by the former governor and ally of President Lula (PT) in Maranhão.
One of them already focuses on the 2026 elections for the Federal Senate, when two seats in the state will be up for grabs. Senator Eliziane Gama (PSD) and the current governor, Carlos Brandão (PSB), are organizing a double bid to be elected with government support, isolating a potential opponent in the dispute, senator Weverton Rocha (PDT) — rapporteur of Dino’s nomination to the STF.
Weverton and Dino became closer this year, after a separation in 2022 due to the elections — the senator came in third place in the race for state government, won by Brandão.
