Alexia Putellas, 29, player of Barcelona and the national team of Spain, was elected this Monday (27) for the second consecutive time as the winner of The Best award, by FIFA, as the best soccer player in the world in 2022.
Putellas, who is also the current female Ballon d’Or, an honor awarded by the French magazine France Football, surpassed the English Beth Mead and the American Alex Morgan in the FIFA poll.
“I was not prepared to receive this award, thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I would also like to congratulate Alex [Morgan] and Beth Mead, you deserve that trophy too. I would like to thank my teammates, technical staff, club. All those who work at the club”, said the player.
Putellas won the championship and the Spanish Cup last season with Barcelona, a club with which he also reached the final of the women’s Champions League – in the decision, he lost to Lyon, from France.
The Spaniard, however, ended up out of the Euro Cup with her national team because of a serious ligament injury in her left knee.
Created by Fifa in 2001, the award for the best of the year in women’s football has the Brazilian Marta as the biggest winner, with six trophies, the first of which was won in 2006 and the last in 2018.
