Google has suspended its artificial intelligence (AI) tool that creates images of people after criticism for inaccuracies in some historical representations generated by the model, the latest obstacle the company has faced in catching up to rivals OpenAI and Microsoft.

The company began offering imaging through its Gemini AI models earlier this month, but in recent days some users on social media have flagged that the model produces historical images that are sometimes inaccurate.

“We are aware that Gemini is providing inaccuracies in some historical imaging representations,” Google said on Wednesday.

Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, Google has strived to produce AI software that rivals what the Microsoft-backed company has introduced.

When Google launched its Bard generative AI chatbot a year ago, the company shared inaccurate information about photos of a planet outside Earth’s solar system in a promotional video, sending its shares down as much as 9%.

Bard was rebranded as Gemini earlier this month and Google launched paid subscription plans that users could choose to get better reasoning capabilities from the AI model.

“Historical contexts are more nuanced, and we’ll adjust further to accommodate that,” said Jack Krawczyk, senior director of Gemini products at Google.
