AI-driven campaign in Mexico could mark new era – 07/30/2023 – #Hashtag

The year 2023 will go down in history as the rise and massification of artificial intelligence after the explosion of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, made available to the general public at the end of 2022.

And Mexico’s presidential election, to be held in June 2024, may be remembered as the first in which artificial intelligence impacted the race.

That’s because an AI-produced video recently went viral — and we’re still a year away from the election.

In the video, Mexican senator Xóchitl Gálvez, who is emerging as one of the main opposition candidates for the Presidency, retorts to Claudia Sheinbaum, the favorite of current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who had said that “not just anyone can be president “, in reference to Gálvez.

“Claudia told me that not just any woman can be president. And she’s right. Those who don’t have conditions, those who need help, those who pretend to be who they are not, cannot those who don’t believe, cannot those who think about winning without thinking about competing, those who don’t dream can’t, those who don’t have a purpose can’t”, said the senator.

“You said you can’t to the wrong person, call me crazy, call me an Indian, call me stubborn, but never tell me I can’t,” she added.

The video, produced by Gálvez supporters, may sound a bit rudimentary. It’s not the best work of artificial intelligence ever created. However, it is powerful in the message and, mainly, in the foreshadowing of how this tool should be used in presidential campaigns from now on.

Mexican newspapers even called it the “campaign driven by artificial intelligence”. After that episode, Gálvez’s name skyrocketed in searches on Google, which made her less of an outsider.

the deepfakes [vídeo manipulados] they’ve been around for a while. But it was always very costly and time consuming to make a video. In Brazil, journalist Bruno Sartori was one of those who stood out, with videos of President Jair Bolsonaro.

But he was the exception. What artificial intelligence allows is the massification of this use. To produce, no one needs to understand machine learning like Sartori anymore. Just have the idea and give the correct commands for the image generator to bring the result.

The implications of this are unpredictable. Will other political campaigns do? Opponents will attack opponents? If the political world in the fake news era was already uncontrollable, we may be entering an even darker era.
