The Advocacy General of the Union (AGU) created a group to act in the defense of indigenous peoples. The normative ordinance establishing the Special Group for the Defense of Indigenous Peoples was published in this Tuesday’s (7th) edition of the Official Gazette. The measure was signed by the Advocate General of the Union, Jorge Messias.

According to the text, the purpose of the group is to “articulate and standardize legal strategies in the advisory and judicial activity in the respective agenda”. There will be special emphasis on action in the Argumentation of Non-compliance with a Fundamental Precept (ADPF) 709, in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and in the Public Civil Action on mining in the Yanomami indigenous land, in the 4th Federal Court of Roraima.

The ordinance informs that the group will be coordinated by a representative of the National Attorney for the Defense of the Climate and the Environment. In addition to him, there will be a representative from each of the following bodies: General Secretariat for Litigation; Federal Attorney General; Union Attorney General; Legal Consultancy with the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples; Legal Consultancy with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security; Legal Consultancy with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change; Legal Consultancy with the Ministry of Health Specialized Federal Attorney with the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources; Specialized Federal Attorney at the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples; Specialized Federal Attorney at the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation; and Specialized Federal Attorney at the National Mining Agency.
