The Attorney General of the Union (AGU) presented to the Ethics Council of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV), representations against volleyball player Wallace Souza, Cruzeiro athlete and Olympic champion for the Brazilian national team, who, last Monday (30), suggested, in a post on a social network, “shooting” President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In the representation destined to the COB, the AGU stated that there was a violation of article 243-D of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (public incitement to hatred or violence) and of articles 8 and 34 of the Code of Ethical Conduct of the COB (respectively for improper use discriminatory expressions and incitement to acts of violence through social networks).

In this way, the AGU asks the COB Council to initiate a disciplinary process and to apply the maximum penalties provided for in both codes: a fine in the amount of R$ 100,000 and banishment from Olympic sport.

In the representation presented to the CBV, the AGU states that Wallace violated art. 43 of the entity’s Code of Ethics and Discipline (which establishes it as the duty of athletes to energetically reject violent manifestations arising from political preference, both in sports and outside of it) and article 243-D of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (public incitement to hatred or violence).

For this reason, the AGU requests that the CBV apply the maximum penalties provided for in the rules: the adoption of written censure, fine and suspension.

Last Tuesday (31), the chief minister of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Paulo Pimenta, reported in a post on twitter which triggered the AGU to “take all necessary measures against the player, who, on Instagram, published a photograph carrying a 12-gauge shotgun and opened it for comments from followers. One of them asked if the athlete “would shoot Lula in the face with that 12”. The player then made a poll about the comment with the same question. Then displayed the result.

Suspension

Also on Tuesday, Cruzeiro released a new note informing that Wallace would be punished, as of this Wednesday, with removal and suspension for an indefinite period, as provided for in his contract: “We hope that the episode will serve as a learning experience for everyone, with a reflection about the conscious use of social networks, and the responsibility that each one has in disseminating good values. Sport should be a tool to spread equality, tolerance and respect”.

sporting entities

THE CBV was another entity to criticize the player’s post: “CBV repudiates any type of violence, or incitement to violent acts, and understands that sport is a tool for propagating values such as respect, tolerance and equality”.

already the COB released a note on the case informing that it sent a representation to the Ethics Council of the entity against the volleyball athlete. The body, which is independent, will proceed with the stages of the process. “The Committee classifies as unacceptable the post made by the player, who represented the Brazilian volleyball team in three Olympic Games”, says the note. “The COB reinforces that what moves Brazilian sport are the Olympic values such as excellence, respect and friendship and that, therefore, there is no room for any violent conduct or incitement to violence”.

In an Instagram post, wallace apologized and acknowledged that he made a mistake in posting. “Anyone who knows me knows that I would never incite violence under any circumstances against anyone and especially our president, so I came here to apologize, it was an unfortunate post that I ended up making. I made a mistake and I’m here apologizing, because when you make a mistake, there’s no way around it, you have to accept the mistake and apologize. I never intended to incite violence, hatred. It’s not my person. That’s not what the sport taught me and that’s not what I want to pass on to anyone.”he declared.
