Agribusiness needs to defend itself from agrotroglodytes in the South – 03/04/2023 – Elio Gaspari

If the agrotroglodytes of the Amazon were not enough, with their burnings and occupations, agribusiness needs to defend itself against the troglodytes of the South as well. About a week ago, 200 Bahian workers were rescued in the Gaucho municipality of Bento Gonçalves.

Hired to harvest grapes, they lived in degrading conditions. Exposed, the Aurora, Salton and Cooperativa Garibaldi wineries regretted what had happened and attributed the wrongdoing to a service provider. This is the protocol followed by all companies caught up in similar malfeasance.

As the wine business is sensitive to embarrassing exposures, the response was quick, clear and perhaps can prove to be sincere. The thing was at that point, when the Center for Industry, Commerce and Services of Bento Gonçalves decided to join the discussion and came out with the following nonsense:

“There is a large portion of the population with full productive conditions and that, even so, is inactive, surviving through a welfare system that has nothing to do with society.”

What the doctors meant was the following: Assistance programs are draining the stock of informal, poorly paid and sometimes degraded labor. In the 21st century, they think that assisting the poor hurts the economy.

Rather than offering lessons in pedestrian political science, the Center’s doctors should pay some attention to the quality of working relationships in the grape business.

In the mid-19th century, farmers in the Paraíba Valley thought it absurd to give away tracts of land or pay wages to Italian and German immigrants. That was what was done in Rio Grande do Sul. Time passed and today there is a thriving wine business there.

Associating it with demeaning forms of work or businessmen who demonize assistance programs is to put the mark of the stupidity of a few maganos on the labels of Rio Grande do Sul wines.

For competing producers, nothing better.

Never have so few done so much harm to the wine industry as its agrotroglodytes.
