After PF operation on deviations in robotics kits, government dismisses MEC director

Moreira’s resignation from MEC comes days after a Federal Police operation against a group suspected of fraud in bidding and money laundering in Alagoas through the purchase of robotics equipment. The head of the MEC, GloboNews found out, decided to dismiss Alexsander Moreira because he understood that the now ex-director may have omitted himself and not acted to prevent the alleged deviations. In Operation Hefesto, the PF investigates possible crimes that occurred between 2019 and 2022 in the purchase of robotics kits for 46 municipalities in the state of Alagoas with funds from the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE). The investigation pointed out that the bidding for the purchase of the kits illegally included restrictions to direct contracts to a single company. According to the PF, R$ 8.1 million were embezzled with the scheme. In addition to the supposed direction, the robotics kits were purchased for prices far above those practiced in the market. The scheme has already been the target of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU) since 2022 when it ordered the federal government to suspend contracts and transfers for the purchase of kits. The overpriced kits were purchased with funds from amendments by the Budget rapporteur, which became known as the “secret budget” and were declared unconstitutional by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) at the end of last year. The company bought sets of electronic items for BRL 2,700 from another company in the interior of São Paulo. The PF’s attention was drawn to the fact that Megalic made money transfers to individuals and companies in Brasília, which transferred large amounts of money. The owners of these companies are Pedro Salomão and his wife, Juliana Salomão. They appear in recordings obtained by the PF making several cash withdrawals from banks and from a Federal Police lottery. The looting was done in fractions, to avoid suspicion by the authorities. The resources were delivered to a man appointed by the PF as the driver of an advisor to the PP leadership in the Chamber. Pedro and Juliana Salomão were arrested in last week’s operation. Lira’s ally is one of the targets One of the targets is Luciano Ferreira Cavalcante, an employee of the Chamber of Deputies who was appointed to lead the PP in the House at the time the position was held by Arthur Lira (PP-AL), current president of the Chamber.
