Overcoming obstacles is something that defines the life of a judoka Jorge Andersem Benathar, 27 years old, who found in sport a motivation to be a better person. At just eight years old, the athlete started to fight judo with master Ronildo Nobre, in Santana.
“My father passed away early and I didn’t have many reins at home and I stayed on the street. Sensei (Ronildo Nobre) found me and gave me the opportunity in the social project and at just 10 years old, I already started competing. Sport saved me and if it weren’t for that, I would be on the streets”, said the athlete.
With this journey in judo, Jorge has already been champion of Amapa, Brazilian and has even competed in international championships in French Guiana and France, obtaining a good position in the ranking. But, the athlete ended up taking new directions in his life. “I lost myself and went to the negative side. The choice I made wasn’t right, but today I’m overcoming it. This is the darkest part of my story.”he said.
The judoka saw his life fall apart when he entered the world of drugs and left the sport, but after realizing he needed support, he managed to change everything and is winning ‘a fight’ every day. “I always try to occupy my mind and I’ve been clean for six months. My day to day is hectic, I go to the gym, I go to work and then I go to train judo and I’m already sleeping early”commented.
The opportunity for improvement arose after the XV Circuito Amapaense de Judo, in February, in which he was champion in the senior category up to 100 kg. According to him, one of the biggest supporters is his cousin, Renato Benathar, who helped him participate in the sporting event.
“My cousin motivated me to participate in this circuit. He paid the registration fee and gave me a kimono. I trained one day and the next was the competition. I had a good result and now I will represent the state in the Regional stage, on April 1st and 2nd. I would like to thank those who helped me: Commander Paulo Bruno, Personal Bruno Giordano, Security Systems Company WF Segurança e Tecnologia, Clínica Maranata, Handerson Pitão, Andrea Rodrigues and Bruno Igreja”.
Jorge is training every day and working at the Maranatha Institute, the place that welcomed him, and is looking for another victory: getting sponsorship. “I would like to ask for help so that they can sponsor me at the gym, so that I can continue working out and eating, as it has not been easy”he said excitedly. “In my kimono there is space to put the name of the sponsors”, finished.
