The UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) says it is “very concerned” with possible consequences of the acts promoted by the MBL (Movimento Brasil Livre) on its campus in Florianópolis.
According to a note sent by the university to the Panel, Andifes (National Association of Directors of Federal Institutions of Higher Education) monitors the movement’s actions, and the university’s Institutional Security Secretariat is in contact with security authorities to map possible risk situations.
One of the concerns, according to the UFSC, “is the type of repercussions on social networks that the subject may have and how much these posts can deepen hatred and encourage new actions”.
MBL militants were at UFSC on the 11th and 13th to erase graffiti from the walls with white paint at the university’s Living Center. There was an argument with students and employees at the site, and members of the movement said they were attacked.
UFSC, on the day of the incident, published a note “repudiating any act of violence on its premises, against anyone”, but also condemned “the action of organized groups, external to the institution, that promote invasions of educational spaces and attitudes that clearly express ignorance of the institutional reality, tarnishing the image of UFSC”.
The MBL, on the other hand, classified the attacks on one of its members, João Bettega, as “attempted murder” and praised “his courage to face this disgusting left”.
