Action seeks to meet the demand of Amazonas in combating fires in the metropolitan region of Manaus

After ministerial meetings this Thursday (28), federal deputy Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM) announced that Rodrigo Agostinho, president of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), confirmed support for the Secretariat of the Environment of the Amazonas to supply equipment to the State Fire Department.

The action seeks to meet the demand of Amazonas in combating fires in the metropolitan region of Manaus, which have made the air quality unhealthy, according to the “Air Quality Index Values” (AQI), a world map that indicates air quality from the air in real time.

“After today’s meetings, we had good news from IBAMA: President Rodrigo Agostinho informed that he would work to release the necessary tools to help fight the fires in Amazonas. Point for IBAMA!”,

declared the parliamentarian on his social networks.

In addition to the support from the federal body, Mandel also began a joint effort with senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE) and other Brazilian parliamentarians to strengthen support for inspection and firefighting actions in the region.

“We are articulating support from other states to fight the fires in Amazonas during this difficult period. I would like to thank all my fellow parliamentarians who made themselves available to try”,

Official agendas

The agendas took place on Thursday (28) with the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, together with the Special Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs, Valmir Prascidelli, who ensured support in forwarding demands regarding the subject to other ministries.

At the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense, the parliamentarian was received by the deputy chief of staff, Paloma Ramos. The meeting also included the participation of the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, who stated that the State has entered a state of emergency and is seeking resources so that there is sufficient equipment for SEMA’s actions.

At the Ministry of Environment, Amom met with the chief of staff of the National Secretariat of Traditional Peoples and Communities and Sustainable Rural Development, Daniel Viegas, and the Secretary of Climate Change, André Lima.

“Until the equipment arrives in Amazonas and is made available, the fire that takes the smoke to Manaus will probably continue to occur. We continue to fight for the federal government to provide immediate assistance,”

declared Ammon.

At the time, MMA representatives did not guarantee short-term actions to solve the problem in the State. However, they committed to establishing partnerships with federal environmental agencies, such as IBAMA, so that equipment is provided to the Fire Department of the State of Amazonas, necessary to combat fires.

The parliamentarian sent letters to the ministries of Environment and Sustainable Development, Health, and Regional Integration and Development, in addition to the Chico Mendes Institute for Environmental Preservation (ICMBio) and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA), to question what the prevention measures, immediate responses and recovery of areas degraded by fire outbreaks.

“The situation is unsustainable and we need a response, because I spoke with the Secretary of the Environment of the State of Amazonas who is here in Brasília, and he already told me that they do not have the capacity today, with the Fire Department there, to put an end to the fire that is occurring in the municipalities of the metropolitan region of Manaus. We need this emergency support and solve this problem”,

stated the parliamentarian in the meetings.

Manaus dawned under an intense cloud of smoke this Thursday (28), reaching the “very unhealthy” level on the “Air Quality Index Values” (AQI), a global map that indicates air quality in real time.
