Abraji (Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism) and Redes Cordiais, a project that seeks to combat disinformation, launch this month the course “From occurrence to final judgment: how to cover criminal guidelines” with the aim of training journalists in the field of law and minimize errors in criminal coverage.
Free, the course is open to journalism and communication students and professionals in the field, and is supported by Uber. Classes will be online and live on March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, always from 7:30 pm to 9 pm (Brasília time). The content will also be recorded and available for three months. Applications can be made using this form.
“Offering continuous training is one of Abraji’s pillars. Not all universities offer legal knowledge during the Journalism graduation – and even if they were presented in theory, it is often in daily practice that doubts arise”, says Katia Brembatti, president from Abraji.
The course will be given by five instructors, among them Brembatti and Tais Gasparian, Folha’s lawyer and specialist in the media area.
Carlos Affonso Souza, director of the Institute of Technology and Society and professor at Uerj (University of the State of Rio de Janeiro), will lecture on legal issues regarding the Civil Rights Framework for the Internet and the LGPD (General Law for the Protection of Personal Data).
Paula Cesarino, who was the ombudsman of Agência Lupa and Sheetwill focus on errors committed by the press in criminal matters, and journalist and ECA-USP professor Eugênio Bucci will talk about ethical principles of the journalistic career.
Clara Becker, co-founder of Redes Cordiais, says that “the fight against misinformation also involves qualifying the news offer and training those who produce it”. “The course aims to reduce damage and noise in the information environment by investing in journalist training.”
