STF defends Barroso and says he talks about “Bolsonarism” does not refer to the institution

The Federal Supreme Court said, in a note released this Thursday (13), that the statement by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, vice president of the Court, that “we defeated Bolsonarism”, did not refer to “the performance of any institution”. “It referred to the popular vote,” the court said in the note.

“As is clearly extracted from the context of Minister Barroso’s speech, the phrase ‘We defeat the dictatorship and Bolsonarism’ referred to the popular vote and not to the performance of any institution”, says the STF note.

In fact, the exact phrase of the minister, during the UNE Congress, in Brasilia, was: “We defeated censorship, we defeated torture, we defeated Bolsonarism, to allow democracy and the free manifestation of all people”. At this time, he did not speak of a “popular vote”.

In Parliament, several right-wing parliamentarians and supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) announced the submission of an impeachment request for Barroso. The law states that it is a crime under the responsibility of a minister to engage in party-political activity and act in a way that is incompatible with the honor, dignity and decorum of his duties.

In the text, the STF says that Barroso, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino (PSB-MA), and deputy Orlando Silva (PC do B-SP) were together, at the UNE Congress, “for a brief intervention on authoritarianism and hate speech”.

“Despite what was announced, the three were very applauded. The boos – which are part of democracy – came from a small group linked to the Brazilian Communist Party, which opposes the current management of the UNE”, said the Court.

Barroso spoke after being booed by protesters because of the decision to suspend, in September last year, the law that established a salary floor for nursing. He considered, at the time, that there was no forecast of resources for the payment. In May of this year, after the government released R$7.3 billion, Barroso revalidated the floor law.
