Defense of former PRF Silvinei Vasques asks for revocation of preventive detention

Silvinei Vasques’ defense asked that the preventive detention of the former director general of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) be revoked. In a petition filed this Monday (14/8), lawyer Eduardo Nostrani says that the warrant signed by the minister did not contain “requirements for preventive detention provided for in the Code of Criminal Procedure”.

“What is happening to Silvinei is a calamity in his personal life. The arguments used, the criminal types used as a basis for arrest, are not based on the requirements of pre-trial detention. The sentences are less than four years”, said the defender.

The former general director of the Federal Highway Police, Silvinei Vasques, was arrested last Wednesday (9) for alleged interference in the second round of the 2022 presidential elections. from the Federal Police, and he was sent to Brasília.

According to the investigations, PRF agents would have carried out more than 500 road operations with the aim of making it difficult for voters to travel on October 30, 2022, mainly in the Northeast region of the country — where the then candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) had an advantage in the electoral polls.

The PF and the Federal Public Ministry of the Federal District seek to clarify the conduct during the elections and the dismantling of road blocks. The charge falls on the crime of prevarication, punishable by up to one year in prison, in addition to a fine.

Before the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8, the former director general of the PRF defended himself against allegations of interference in the presidential race, denying irregularities in the blitz operations. During his testimony in June, he claimed to have complete autonomy in the body. Vasques rejected influence in the vote during his testimony to the CPMI and denied having used his position to benefit Bolsonaro in the elections.
