The main entrance to the Planalto Palace was unguarded for 45 minutes after police and military personnel from the BGP (Presidential Guard Battalion) lifted the blockade at the site during the January 8 attacks, reveal videos from the internal security circuit of the Executive headquarters.

Without riot teams, Bolsonarist vandals who had already entered the Planalto through other places opened the main door of the building – which facilitated the access of the scammers and the depredation of windows, works of art and security equipment.

The threat to invade the Planalto Palace began around 3 pm, when the National Congress was already taken over by the coup leaders and a group of vandals faced military police in the building’s parking lot.

Around 20 police and military personnel from the BGP then set up a roadblock at 3:11 pm in front of the main gate that gives access to the palace. In the distance, Bolsonaristas threw stones, cones and fire extinguishers.

With the advance of the coup plotters and the entry of vandals from other places, the PM and the BGP undid the blockade at 4:26 pm — a moment when, without security, criminals opened the door of the Planalto Palace from the inside and called the other radical Bolsonarists to invade the seat of the Executive.

One of the men who opened the door asked the invaders “not to break anything”. Another summoned the scammers to come in, shouting “out, thief”.

In the next 45 minutes, the scenes captured by the camera at the entrance to the Planalto register a series of depredations.

A man with the Brazilian National Team shirt written Kaká picked up an iron stick left on the ground and struck the X-ray machine at the entrance to the palace.

Another, also wearing the soccer team shirt, threw chairs used by the GSI (Institutional Security Office) guards outside the building. One of the seats hit a Bolsonarist who was crossing the spot. With the impact, he dropped an object he was holding, demonstrated to have been injured, but continued on.

At 3:34 pm, a shirtless man wearing a Brazilian national team cap entered the main hall of the palace on a bicycle.

He stayed two minutes inside the building. On his way out, he kicked a metal divider, spun his bike around and left, shouting “now Brazil is going”.

Most of the vandals used their cell phones to make recordings and livestreams. One of them repeated the phrase “look at this from here” five times to show followers the X-ray portico at the entrance to the palace.

The situation at the entrance to the Planalto was only controlled at 4:01 pm, when the BGP advanced with the military in line against the vandals. The main means used to disperse the coup plotters was tear gas, without the need for direct confrontation.

The images reveal the low security staff on the day of the invasion. In addition to the lack of shock police from the Military Police of the DF (Military Police of the Federal District), the Battalion of the Presidential Guard only had 36 soldiers in the Planalto Palace at the beginning of the invasions.

Only after the palace was taken did the GSI receive reinforcement from the BGP: first two companies were sent, with 173 soldiers, and then a group with another 120.

There are no figures officially confirmed by the PM of the DF on the staff that had been employed at the Esplanada dos Ministérios on January 8th.

Part of the images was initially released by CNN this week. The videos led to the downfall of Gonçalves Dias, former minister of the GSI – the first resignation of the Lula government 3. The general had to give testimony to the PF last Friday (21st), as well as all the GSI servants who appear in the images .

To the police, the general said that there was a general “blackout” of the intelligence system in the January 8 crisis. He also said he did not know how to inform what was the risk classification given by the authorities for the day of the attacks.

“When asked if the declarant understands whether there was an intelligence blackout, he replied that he believes there was a general ‘blackout’ in the system due to the lack of information for decision-making,” he said. The general’s statement was obtained by Sheet.

Despite the attitude considered by Lula’s assistants as being lenient by members of the GSI who circulated on the day of the invasion, the trigger for the general’s downfall was the fact that he did not show the images from the cameras of the presidential office after the attacks, as demanded by the agent.

He would have been informed, by members of the GSI, that there were no images of the place. One of the cameras, in front of Janja’s office, for example, was covered for hours. But it is possible to see the arrival of vandals to the place.
