1/8 CPI does not excite Covid CPI shock troops – 04/21/2023 – Panel

Despite the encouragement of parliamentarians and palace assistants, the senators who led the Covid CPI are not excited about the possibility of participating in the CPMI that will be installed to investigate the January 8 coup attacks.

Humberto Costa (PT-PE) and Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) give similar arguments: in the mixed format, with deputies and senators, it runs a great risk of getting lost in clashes produced for Bolsonarist networks and yielding little in terms of investigations. The Covid CPI was composed only of senators, a format they would like to see repeated.

In addition to the two, other members of the so-called shock troops say, in private, that so far the CPI does not seem as promising as the one they organized in 2021, which generated great wear and tear for the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government and gave prestige to the group at the base of Lula (PT).

Costa compares the 8/1 commission with the CPMI that dealt with fake news.

“I have my doubts whether this CPI will manage to have political relevance. I think it looks more like the CPMI of fake news, in which each session was a clash, fight, confusion, people just wanting to make trouble. for that than for what the Covid CPI was, which had serious debate and investigation. I don’t know if they won’t hand over the report to someone disqualified. I’m still analyzing whether it will be worth it or not”, says the former Minister of Health.

Calheiros says that the climate should be that of Tuesday (18), when a group of Bolsonarist deputies invaded a meeting of Senate leaders to demand the creation of the CPMI.

“I defended the CPI by the Senate, but then the government understood that would not be the case. We would have more common sense, serenity, questioning, complementing the investigation. The mixed CPI generally has a high temperature, from the point of view of the clashes, and produces less” , he says.

He, however, does not rule out participation, and says that nobody likes to participate in the CPI, but that it is a mission that must be accepted if the request is made by the party.
