World rice production falls; the wheat one goes up – 01/17/2023 – Shuttle

World rice production drops to 503 million tons in the 2022/23 season, the first decline in seven years, which reduces room for price declines in the international market.

Some production declines are significant, such as that of the United States. The country will suffer a decline of 16%, registering the lowest volume in 28 years. US exports fall 20% to a 36-year low.

The data are from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), which points out the main reductions in production in China, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, in addition to the United States.

Rice is one of the commodities with the lowest volumes of international transactions. In the 2022/23 harvest, only 54.4 million tons of cereal will cross borders.

China, the main world producer, will have a harvest of 146 million tons, 2% less than the previous year. India, on the other hand, presents a positive evolution in productivity, but the expected harvest of 125 million tons will be 4.1% lower than last year.

The USDA also released this Tuesday (17) world wheat production, which rises to 781.3 million tons, 2 million above that of 2021/22.

The volume supports prices at lower levels, after the rise in Russia’s war with Ukraine. The first contract in Chicago is at US$ 7.51 per bushel (27.2 kg).

World exports reach 210 million tonnes, and eyes are on Ukraine, which will have just 13 million tonnes to place on the foreign market, a potential well below that of the pre-war period.

Total wheat consumption is expected to reach 783.2 million tons, 155.3 million, however, will go to feed production and purposes other than human consumption.
