Manaus (AM) – The actions of the Government of Amazonas, through the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas (Fapeam) to encourage greater participation of women and girls in science were highlighted in the 5th Workshop to disseminate the Reference Framework for Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Brazil.

The event is promoted by British Council Brazil and it was held this Monday (31), at the Rio Javari Auditorium, at the Faculty of Technology of the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam).

During the meeting, the director-president of Fapeam, Márcia Perales Mendes Silva, highlighted that the consolidation of a Reference Framework, together with the initiatives that are already being carried out in Amazonas, strengthen a more diverse and inclusive science and highlighted the actions developed by the Fapeam since 2020, within the framework of the Women and Girls in Science Movement.

This action ranges from activities to popularize science to encourage greater participation of women in scientific careers, as well as encouraging women to play a leading role in coordinating research projects.

“Since 2020, Fapeam has been carrying out activities that encourage academic diversity and inclusion in the various areas of knowledge, especially in STEMs (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). We start with an edition of the Fapeam at the Fair, and today the Foundation promotes exclusive programs for women scientists”,

said Marcia Perales.

In addition to the director of Fapeam, they also participated in the workshop the coordinator of the Psychology course at Ufam, professor Iolete Ribeiro Silva and the head of the Department of Mathematics at Ufam, professor Disney Douglas Oliveira.

The objective of the event was to share the Reference Framework developed based on the experience of the Higher Education Institutions participating in the public notice Women in Science: UK-Brazil Gender Equality Partnerships – 2021 and discuss gender equality in the sector.

In addition, the action aims to act as an incentive, instigating systemic and cultural changes to face discrimination, eliminate exclusionary practices and policies and change behaviors in higher education and research in Brazil.

The workshop is part of a series of 10 events to be held in the five regions of the country, in order to disseminate the Reference Framework for Gender Equality in higher education institutions in Brazil.

Led by the British Council, Marco Referencial is the result of research and collaboration between Brazilian and British institutions, inspired by the Athena Swan Charter of the United Kingdom, whose objective is to provide instruments that allow higher education institutions and entities that promote and support research to monitor and demand the fulfillment of goals that lead to greater diversity in the higher education ecosystem.
