The government of Pará is considering renting ocean liners to use them as hotels at COP30, the UN climate change conference, scheduled for November 2025, in Belém. It would be the solution to meet the needs of the hotel chain in the capital of Pará.

Last week, the UN approved Brazil’s candidacy to host the event. The announcement was made official by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), who has been seeking the post of host city for the meeting since the turn of the year.

The COP makes a series of conditions for cities to host an event of this type. Among the requirements is the establishment of a hotel chain.

The forecast of the state government is to receive between 70,000 and 100,000 people on the days of the weather event.
To resolve pending issues with infrastructure, Barbalho makes agreements with the federal government to develop logistical modes in the state.

Two weeks ago, he met with the Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França, and discussed investments in the modernization of Val de Cans airport and the creation of a waterway terminal that would serve to house ocean liners.

The government of Pará has already announced that it will use the area of the former Brigadeiro Protássio airport to create a multifunctional space, which will serve as an event center, museum space, theater, among others. The location is pointed out as a possible point of support for the COP30 meeting.
