With growth, companies in the tourism sector are returning to invest and create jobs in Brazil

The good expectations for the resumption of Brazilian tourism in the post-pandemic continue to boost small businesses and generate jobs in the country. Data released by the Ministry of Tourism (Mtur), based on information from the General Register of Employees and Unemployed (Novo Caged) of the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), point out that, in the first half of this year, tourism has already created more than 105 thousand new jobs. In view of the positive scenario, the owners of micro and small companies (MSEs) are making investments to ensure better quality of services and increased demand.

In Amazonas, tourism promoted an injection of approximately R$ 170 million in the economy in the first four months of this year, with the arrival of 55,930 thousand tourists to the state. In the region, investments are aimed at reconciling the development of the tourism production chain with a sustainable agenda.

“Tourism is a segment that manages to reconcile development with preservation, with conservation, with a sustainable agenda, so tourism is the new economy, we have to adapt and create public policies”,

explained the president of the State Tourism Company (Amazonastur), Gustavo Sampaio.

In Parnaíba, Piauí, businesswoman Denise Campos and her husband Junno Sousa jointly manage the VM Group, responsible for the pioneering complex of tourism-oriented enterprises in the region. The travel agency VM Experience, a member of the group, has already earned 30% more than last year. Also, because of the high season, they hired more pilots for the boats available for rent and off road activities. The Faustino restaurant, opened less than a year ago, has already hired 13 employees this year, including waiters, waiters, cleaning and administrative professionals.

“We strongly believe in tourism in Piauí, integrated into the Route of Emotions, which also includes Ceará and Maranhão. Proof of this is that we bought three new boats and make continuous investments in the marina, which is crowded on weekends. We believe in this recovery and that we can grow even more”,

says the businesswoman.

In Mato Grosso, in the North Pantanal region, the couple Lisa Canavarro and Giuliano Bernardon have owned the Aymara Lodge in Poconé since 2019. After the critical period of the pandemic and the fire that spread through the region, in 2020, the small The business has already managed to recover from its losses and is investing in improvements at the site. According to the entrepreneur, compared to last year, there was a 20% increase in demand.

The inn, which started operating with five employees, currently employs 19 people, four of whom were hired this year. The entrepreneur points out that she faces difficulties in finding qualified and committed labor, but that this does not prevent the growth of the business.

“Our business is aimed at the foreign public, but we also started to receive many Brazilians, which was not very common before the pandemic. This year, demand has improved a lot. We are investing in the structure and quality of services. We managed to buy our own boat for the tours and I am waiting for the budget to build an observation tower”,

said Lisa.

Businessman Lucas Alves Ferreira, who runs Balneário Estrela do Formoso, in Bonito (MS), also believes in the sustainable resumption of tourism in the region. Even after the heavy rains at the beginning of the year disrupted the business, he is getting ready to receive more tourists by the end of 2023. In order not to depend on the river and suffer from the impacts of the local climate, the businessman launched new products, such as quad bike tours with contemplation, which required the hiring of two new employees.

“The beginning of the year was totally out of line with what we had planned and this impacted the speed of investments a little, but that does not mean that we are going to reduce our pace. We had pent-up demand in the first half, but I’m betting the weather will be better going forward. I am also following the movement of the economy and the intention is to hire more people”, he emphasizes.

Moment of Opportunities

The national coordinator of Tourism at Sebrae, Ana Clévia Guerreiro, points out that the country is experiencing a favorable climate with the resumption of the sector and the Brazil brand abroad. According to her, the sustainable resumption of Brazilian tourism needs actions from all the actors involved, whether from the private sector, or from the government and representative entities.

“It is a climate that infects those who undertake and also those who like to travel. So, it is an opportunity to reposition the sector in order to meet the expectations of this tourist, whether Brazilian or foreign, who wants to find a quality service, live memorable experiences and be enchanted by our very unique identity”,

stresses.

She also highlights that Brazil has multiple vocations for tourism, with the ability to please all tastes and adds that the fact that the country offers a variety of attractions in the same territory and destination also favors the development of the sector, formed by 97% of small business.
