Who are the victims of slavery in Brazil? See charts – 7/2/2023 – Training

The rescue of people in situations of modern slave labor officially began in 1995 in Brazil and, on the last June 14th, reached 61,711 victims removed from exploitation by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

But who are these people? Data on the profile of workers began to be collected from 2003 onwards, with the payment of unemployment insurance benefits to them.

According to official records, the greater probability is that work analogous to slavery affects a black man, born in the Northeast and who studied up to a maximum of the fifth year.

An agricultural worker, he is generally enticed by promises of employment in regions close to his hometown.

The work involves raising cattle, growing sugarcane and coffee, forest production and building construction.

The first rescue in an urban environment only took place in 2002, seven years after the start of fiscal combat actions.

The first official allegations of domestic work analogous to slavery emerged in 2017. According to the Inspection Division for the Eradication of Slave Work, about 86% of those rescued from this type of exploitation are women.

What is known so far about the rescued women is that, as in the general profile, they are black, from the Northeast and work in agriculture.

In 2018, the Ministry of Labor received the first complaints about sex work analogous to slavery.

After enticement, exploitation, denunciation and rescue, women and men have access to unemployment insurance. In 64.7% of Brazilian municipalities, those rescued are included in the Single Registry to be accompanied by social assistance.

According to the International Labor Organization, between 2003 and 2017, 613 workers were rescued at least twice in Brazil. This number corresponds to 1.73% of the sample.
