The company says that, at first, the function will be limited to selected companies, but that, ‘soon’, individuals and other companies will be able to create channels with millions of members. WhatsApp launches “Channels” feature globally Disclosure/WhatsApp WhatsApp announced this Wednesday (13) the global launch of the Channels feature, which allows people and companies to send messages to an unlimited number of users in a “group”, something similar to that Telegram already offers. g1 is now on WhatsApp Channels; see how to participate With this new feature, WhatsApp also becomes a channel for transmitting mass information. Access will be gradually released to users, as with each new WhatsApp feature. Channels will appear in a separate tab called “Updates”. There, you will be able to find the new, most active and most popular Channels. And, initially, only selected and verified partner channels will be available, including g1. “Soon”, everyone will be able to create their “Channels”, said Guilherme Horn, head of WhatsApp for strategic markets. “Individuals and companies will be able to have Channels without limiting the number of participants. In other countries, we already have groups with millions of people,” Horn told g1. No end-to-end encryption Unlike Telegram, the tool does not allow comments, only reactions with emojis to the content sent. And unlike messages exchanged between individual accounts and groups, Channels are not protected with end-to-end encryption by default. Horn told g1 that WhatsApp will monitor and moderate the content that will be sent. “We are prepared to curb any illegal topic. We have a team in Brazil and it will be work similar to what is done on Instagram and Facebook”, said the executive. He also explained that the creators will not have any information from the participants. Not even mutual contacts will be able to see which friends and family are in a channel. What about ‘WhatsApp Communities’? The Channels launched today are different from WhatsApp Communities, which was made official in Brazil at the beginning of this year. The objective of Communities is to bring together several WhatsApp groups under one umbrella. Thus, the feature allows you to add up to 50 groups in a community, supporting up to five thousand people. “In the case of Communities, there are different groups for interaction. There is an interaction there. In Channels, it is a broadcast. One person communicating and several receiving, so it is a different distribution of content”, says the head of WhatsApp for strategic markets.
