To access the WhatsApp account on a new device, users will need to approve the procedure on the old cell phone. The novelty aims to alert about unauthorized attempts to transfer the profile to another device, and was announced by Meta this Thursday (13).
Transfer is usually the first stage of the cloned WhatsApp scam, in which third parties manage to enter the person’s account.
Currently, it is necessary to enter a verification code sent by SMS when logging in again. However, scammers manage to circumvent recognition, contacting the target and pretending to need the characters informed by WhatsApp to provide some service.
The need for authorization on the previous cell phone serves as another step of protection, according to a statement released by the messaging application.
WhatsApp also claims to have strengthened security against malicious programs, which can exploit the phone without the owner’s authorization. The app added automatic verification steps to prevent access from strangers other than the phone’s owner.
The company will also start to inform if a conversation is protected by encryption. Just select the desired contact and click the “Encryption” button. It was already possible to confirm this security measure, but the application required reading a QR Code.
The three measures are intended to reinforce the protection of WhatsApp accounts, according to Meta.
The company also recommends that users enable two-step verification and end-to-end encrypted backups. The first refers to enabling a six-character password to connect to WhatsApp; the second, to the protection of conversations stored in the cloud.
This week, WhatsApp also announced other news, such as the release of a new payment system through the application and the beta version of a new mode that allows you to connect up to four cell phones to a single account.
