What can Brazil learn from the Argentine law that increased the number of women in the festival line-up?

According to the study, this happened after the event dedicated an entire day of programming just to women. “Goiania Noise also went from 0% to 4.1%, unlike Porão do Rock, which fell from 2% to 0% of female soloists in its programming. This percentage was achieved due to the presence of singer and songwriter Pitty. Once again, the artist was the only woman in the entire event program.” Quota law in Argentina Thabata prepared the research after following a survey by a Chilean content platform called Ruidosa, with figures on female participation in Spanish-speaking festivals in Latin America. “I was shocked, because the numbers were 2%, 3%. I asked about data from Brazil and they didn’t have it,” she says. To assemble her survey, she used the methodology used in a survey carried out in Argentina, which gave rise to a law, the Ley de Cupo en Eventos Musicales, which requires at least 30% female presence in musical events with at least three attractions. After three years of law enforcement, the total average is 32.19%. “In Argentina, it is understood that the absence of women in these places falls within the umbrella of gender-based violence at work,” says Thabata. “There has to be this diversity because we are denying jobs to some women who spend their entire lives professionalizing and are unable to envision a career that is consistent and sustainable.” Keeping an eye on the curation In November, the Rock in the Mountain festival, which is in its tenth edition, had a line-up of only women, of various styles. There are names like Maria Bethânia, Iza, Marisa Monte, Alcione, Pitty and Daniela Mercury. Putting together this program, Brautigam says he had more difficulty. “It was much easier to find male bands, I had to do a lot of research to find them,” he says. “This is a job that has to be general, not just for the musicians, but also for the producers, the venues, the bars, you really have to look for it, because it’s much easier to call a male band that you already know, that already has visibility and disclosure.” Demi Lovato presents all members of her band Thabata agrees that curators need to pay more attention when organizing festival programming, however, she remembers that it can also be an initiative by already established artists. “I was a big fan of Pitty and when I see her doing what she could do, I would be very happy: she is in a very comfortable place today.
