Manaus (AM) – Despite being a preventable disease, venous thromboembolism affected an average of 884 Brazilians per year in the North between 2012 and 2022 and many were hospitalized as a result of the disease, according to data from the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBAVC). The disease can cause several complications and even lead to death if not treated properly.

“Deep vein thrombosis can lead to a number of potentially fatal medical conditions, including pulmonary embolism, if patients do not receive appropriate care,”

says vascular and endovascular surgeon Eduardo Ramacciotti, professor at Loyola University Chicago (USA) and head of the Cardiovascular Medicine department at the Dr. Cristóvão da Gama Hospital and Maternity, of the DASA Group.

Deep vein thrombosis, a condition characterized by the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the veins, is a silent disease, so it does not always present symptoms. In some cases, the signs are pain in the lower limbs, swelling and increased temperature in the legs.

For this reason, medical evaluation is essential to check the predisposition to thrombosis or its development, in order to determine prophylactic measures for prevention or the best therapeutic approach to combat the disease. Accurate diagnosis and effective treatment are essential to prevent its progression.

Another important aspect is raising awareness about the disease to identify risk factors and symptoms, increasing the chances of success in preventive and therapeutic treatments.

Risk factors and treatment

Genetic predisposition, advanced age, cancer, prolonged hospitalizations, obesity, use of contraceptives, alcohol consumption, smoking and lack of movement are some of the main risk factors.

Therefore, the first step to reducing the chances of developing the disease is to adopt a healthy lifestyle, with a balanced diet, adequate hydration, physical activity and regular visits to the doctor.

Not sitting or standing for too long and wearing compression stockings can also help reduce the occurrence of blood clots in the lower limbs.

“The treatment of venous thrombosis guarantees a better quality of life for patients. For example, the use of biomedicines (such as enoxaparin) for the prevention and treatment of the disease has proven to be very efficient and safe, with very positive perspectives for both patients and the healthcare system”,

explains Ramacciotti.

Therefore, if the patient is going to have surgery and has a history of thrombosis, a simple risk score (Caprini score) can indicate which patients will benefit from the use of anticoagulants to prevent or eliminate thrombi.

The prevention or effective control of deep vein thrombosis also contributes to reducing the costs of complications, fewer hospitalizations and greater bed turnover to care for people with other serious illnesses or undergoing surgery.

“The intelligent and rational use of resources helps maintain financial balance and makes it possible to invest more in new technologies in the care sector”, concludes the expert.
