The forecast is to start immunization in February
The Ministry of Health informed this Monday (15) that it will prioritize the age group of 6 to 16 years in the application of the dengue vaccine.
The country will acquire 5.2 million doses of Qdenga, manufactured by the Japanese laboratory Takeda, in addition to receiving donations. The amount will make it possible to vaccinate up to 3 million people, as the vaccination schedule provides for two doses.
According to the director of the National Immunization Program (PNI), Eder Gatti, the age group is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and recommended by the Technical Advisory Chamber on Immunization, made up of experts in the field and which met today.
“Within this group [6 a 16 anos]let’s see which is the best age group to have the best epidemiological result, avoiding hospitalizations and deaths”,
explained the director.
The definition of the target audience, as well as the priority locations, will be made together with states and municipalities, in a meeting scheduled for the last Thursday of this month.
Gatti confirmed that vaccination is expected to begin in February. On December 21, the Ministry of Health announced the incorporation of the vaccine into the Unified Health System (SUS). According to the federal government, Brazil is the first country in the world to offer the vaccine in a public and universal system.
The Qdenga immunizer is registered with the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and is indicated for preventing dengue fever from 4 to 60 years of age, regardless of whether the person has previously had the disease or not.
Brazil broke a record for deaths from dengue in 2023. There were 1,079 deaths from the disease as of December 27th.
According to the WHO, the country has the highest number of cases of the disease in the world, accounting for half of the global total. Health authorities have already warned of an epidemic of the disease in Brazil in 2024.
