US should reduce exports of AI chips to China – 06/27/2023 – Market

The United States is considering new restrictions on exports of artificial intelligence chips to China, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday (27), citing sources familiar with the matter.
Nvidia shares were down more than 2%, while AMD shares were down about 1.5% postmarket on the news.
The US Commerce Department will stop shipments of chips made by Nvidia and other chip companies to customers in China as early as July, according to the report.
Nvidia, Micron and AMD are among US chipmakers caught in the crossfire between China and the Biden administration.
In September, Nvidia said US officials had asked the company to stop exporting two types of high-end computing chips for artificial intelligence work to China.
The Commerce Department did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The new restrictions being considered by the department would prohibit the sale of even unlicensed A800 chips, the report added.
