University hospitals are references in organ transplants in Brazil. The most varied types of transplantation such as cornea and liver are performed by trained professionals, professors, with the help of students, who in the near future will be specialists in the subject.

Since 2016, the University Hospital Professor Polydoro Ernani de São Thiago, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, has performed liver and corneal transplants. Currently, five patients are on the waiting list and about 40 are being followed up at the outpatient clinic for liver transplantation. As for corneal transplants, there are 32 patients waiting on the waiting list.

In Curitiba, the Complexo do Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Paraná performed the first bone marrow transplant in Latin America in 1979 and is currently a world reference in the area. It was also the first hospital in the state to perform liver transplantation between living people, called intervivo transplantation, in 1991, and the second in Brazil to perform double intervivo liver and kidney transplants in the same year, in addition to performing corneal transplants.

In the Southeast, the Hospital Universitário Cassiano Antônio Moraes, of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, is a reference in cornea harvesting and transplantation. The unit has an outpatient clinic and an eye bank in the midst of a statewide waiting list that reaches 800 patients. Between 1998 and 2022, 2,004 corneal transplants were performed at the hospital.

In the Midwest, the Hospital Universitário de Brasília, of the University of Brasília, performs corneal and kidney transplants and, in 2022, recorded the highest number of kidney transplants in the Federal District (DF). Of the 101 kidney transplants performed in the DF over the past year, 32 were performed at the University Hospital.

In the North Region, the only hospital that performs corneal transplants through the Unified Health System (SUS) is in Pará: the University Hospital Complex of the Federal University of Pará, formed by the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital and the Bettina University Hospital. Iron de Souza. Between 2011 and 2023, 717 procedures were recorded.

Finally, in the Northeast, the Walter Cantídio University Hospital, part of the UFC/Ebserh Hospital Complex, is a reference in the region for liver transplantation through the SUS. The multidisciplinary team is the second that most performs liver transplants in the country. Since 2002, when the first procedure was performed, until March 2023, there are records of 1,398 transplants performed.

According to the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplants, any individual can be a donor. For this, it is enough to present a picture of good health attested by a doctor.

Organ donations also follow some age limits such as 75 years for kidneys; 70 years for liver; 69 years for blood; 65 years for skin, bones and heart valves; 55 years for lung, heart and bone marrow; and 50 years for pancreas. There is no limit for donating corneas.

“As long as it does not cause damage to itself, any legally capable person is permitted by law to dispose of tissues, organs and parts of his own body for therapeutic purposes or transplants, for the benefit of his spouse and blood relatives up to the fourth degree. . For non-relatives, it is necessary to obtain judicial authorization, which is waived in cases of bone marrow donation.”

According to the Brazilian Company of Hospital Services (Ebserh), clarification and awareness campaigns on organ donation have allowed good results, increasing the number of donors and reducing cases of refusal by families. The state of Santa Catarina, according to the entity, is a good example, as it presented only 28% of refusals in the year 2022, according to the Brazilian Registry of Transplants.
