The unemployment rate rose by 16 states in the first quarter of 2023, the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) reported this Thursday (18). In the other states, the indicator was stable in relation to the immediately previous three months.
The data are part of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), which analyzes both the formal and informal labor market.
In Brazil, the unemployment rate rose to 8.8% in the first quarter of this year, after reaching 7.9% in the immediately previous three months. Despite the progress, the indicator is the lowest for the first quarter since 2015 (8%).
Historically, the beginning of the year registers an increase in unemployment. The search for job vacancies is usually driven by factors such as the end of year-end temporary contracts.
In addition, according to analysts, the recovery of the labor market tends to lose speed in 2023. The projection is associated with the scenario of deceleration of economic activity amid the context of high interest rates.
