The United Nations (UN) will present eight humanoid robots capable of carrying out tasks for social good at a global summit on AI (Artificial Intelligence) scheduled for July in Geneva, it said in a statement.
At the meeting, which takes place on July 6 and 7, the International Telecommunications Union, a UN agency, wants to show how new technologies and AI can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the fight against the climate crisis and support to humanitarian action.
“It is in our collective interest to shape artificial intelligence faster than it shapes us,” new ITU Secretary General Doreen Bogdan-Martin said in a statement.
“This summit, the UN’s premier platform for AI, will bring together leading voices representing a diversity of interests to ensure that artificial intelligence can be a powerful catalyst for progress in our race to save the SDGs,” he added.
At the meeting, which will bring together more than 20 robotics experts, eight humanoid robots — named Beonmi, Nadine, Sophia, Geminoid, 4NE-1, Ai-Da Robot, Grace and Desdemona — will show their skills in firefighting, distributing aid, health care and sustainable agricultural management.
