Twitter: New York Times loses verification stamp – 4/2/2023 – #Hashtag

The American newspaper The New York Times lost the seal of verification on its main Twitter account, which has 54 million followers and is the 24th most followed profile on the network.

Twitter said it would start removing free badges starting this Saturday (1st), offering them only to individuals and organizations that subscribe to the company’s services.

The newspaper had announced on Thursday (30) that it would not pay the monthly fee imposed to maintain the seal, of U$ 1,000 (about R$ 5,063), nor would it reimburse employees and collaborators for the costs of subscribing to Twitter Blue, which provides a signal blue on personal accounts.

Until this Sunday afternoon, other accounts belonging to the American publication on the network, such as the New York Times World, New Yorks Times Arts and New York Times Opinion, maintain the golden seal of authenticity.

In addition, competing vehicles, such as The Washighton Post, and others that also announced their refusal to adhere to the paid stamp, such as Buzzfeed and the Los Angeles Times, still present verification.

Twitter’s movement seems to go against an internal social network document revealed by the New York Times itself on Friday (31). According to the file, the 10,000 organizations with the most followers and the 500 with the highest advertising spend would keep the seal free of charge.

Hours after the removal, the owner of the platform, Elon Musk, criticized the newspaper, calling the content produced by the vehicle “propaganda that is not even interesting”. Musk also said that the newspaper’s profile feed is the equivalent of “diarrhea” and that only top stories should be posted online.

“The real tragedy of the New York Times is that their ad isn’t even interesting. Plus their feed is the Twitter equivalent of diarrhea. They would have a lot more real followers if they just posted their top stories. the publications”, said the businessman.

Before Musk took over the company, verification seals were distributed free of charge as a way of attesting to the authenticity of profiles considered notable and of public relevance, such as politicians, celebrities, academics and media outlets.

The new rules are part of Musk’s strategy to increase the company’s sources of revenue. Since last year, he claims that Twitter is experiencing financial problems and that it needs to restructure its business model.

The Twitter Blue and Verified Organizations services are the billionaire’s main bets in this regard and offer, in addition to the badges, exclusive features such as the reduction of advertisements on the timeline, the possibility of editing tweets and greater visibility to the accounts.
