The world’s largest chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, has agreed to manufacture its most advanced products in Arizona starting in 2028, boosting White House efforts to bring global semiconductor production to American soil.
TSMC will manufacture the latest 2-nanometer chips at a factory it is building in Phoenix, Arizona, marking an upgrade from its previous plans.
This installation will be the company’s second in the US. The first, which is also in Arizona and was announced in 2020 during the Trump administration, will begin production next year.
TSMC also announced on Monday (8) that it will increase its total investment in the US from US$40 to US$65 billion to build a third, more advanced factory, which will be operational by 2030.
The Taiwanese company and the U.S. Commerce Department said on Monday that Washington will provide support worth $6.6 billion in subsidies and up to $5 billion in loans.
The subsidies are authorized by the “Chip Act,” passed in 2022 to boost U.S. chip manufacturing.
Last month, the Biden administration revealed an agreement for US$8.5 billion in subsidies and up to US$11 billion in loans for American Intel, which committed to US$100 billion in new investments.
TSMC’s commitment helps the White House move toward its goal of bringing 20% of the world’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing to American soil by 2030.
However, TSMC’s cutting-edge investment in factories in Taiwan continues to far outpace investment in the US. Mass production of the 2-nanometer chips will begin next year, and the company plans to build additional factories operating with the technology at three sites in Taiwan, Liu told investors in January.
