The closure of the Eiffel Tower due to a strike called by management workers there left disappointed tourists who came from far and wide to see one of France’s most famous attractions.
“We would have changed the date of the trip if we had known there would be a problem like this,” said Argentinian Gabriel Mimica, 42, who said he was disappointed with the strike.
“We came with every expectation of seeing the tower, we got out of the taxi and nothing, we just saw the poster [que informava sobre o fechamento]”, stated Mimica, who came to Paris for the first time with her family.
Courtney Scott, traveling with her partner, said she was outraged. “We left our baby at home to allow us this romantic walk and we couldn’t go up,” said the 30-year-old Irish woman.
The strike was announced by the two unions of monument workers in the French capital, CGT and FO. According to the strikers, the current management is leading Sete, the company that operates the tower, into an unsustainable situation.
The unions claim that the business model supported by Paris City Hall, the company’s majority shareholder, has an imbalance between revenue and expenses, which has worsened with the Covid crisis.
The Eiffel Tower, the most famous monument in Paris, received 6.3 million visitors in 2023, a higher number than in 2019, before the pandemic. Built in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the monument quickly became the symbol of the French capital.
The tower is expected to remain closed this Monday. The expectation is that a new general assembly will decide on Tuesday whether the strike will continue or not.
