North American band is headliner at The Town this Saturday (9). Vocalist Dave Grohl was Nirvana’s drummer until the early 1990s, when Kurt Cobain passed away. Foo Fighters’ new album has melodic rock with ‘back to basics’. Fans of Foo Fighters and Nirvana at The Town Gustavo Honório/g1 The big name of the day at The Town is, without a doubt, the rock phenomenon Foo Fighters, led by vocalist Dave Grohl, who was the drummer for another icon of the genre, Nirvana , which was a huge success in the early 90s. Of all the days of the festival, this Saturday (9) was the one in which the public was most fanatical about a band or artist, because, in an informal count by g1, seven out of every ten shirts were Foo Fighters. Mato Grosso native Monique Fernanda was one of the first to set foot on the Interlagos Racetrack. Accompanied by three other friends, she set up camp close to the Skyline stage railing and promises to leave there only after Grohl’s last breath on the microphone, that is, 10 hours after the gates open. (photo below) “No one can get me out of here, I’m just going forward. I came on top of a brick so I could see”, she joked, wearing a boot with a sole of around 10 centimetres. It is the second time that the tourism specialist has honored the group. The first was at Rock in Rio, in 2019. Journalism student Nicolle Martins received a birthday ticket from a friend’s mother. She only started listening to Foo Fighters this year, precisely for The Town. Even so, expectations are high. Nicolle Martins, Claudia Webber and Monique Fernanda, Foo Fighters fans Gustavo Honório / g1 Douglas Benavides bought a ticket for The Town in April, when he found out that Queens of the Stone Age would play at the festival. However, the band had to cancel, but the internationalist wasn’t upset, as he is also a big fan of Dave Grohl’s band. “I like Foo Fighters because it’s a direct legacy of Nirvana,” he explained, who, in addition to the T-shirt paying homage to Kurt Cobain, wore socks with the grunge band’s symbol. Douglas Benavides wears a Nirvana sock Gustavo Honório/g1 “Dave’s post-Nirvana projects have everything to do with Queens of Stone Age. Dave has already played on Queens’ Songs for the Deaf album”, he added. “I’m also a big fan of Foo Fighters, I’ve been listening to it since I was little,” said physiotherapist Jéssica Barbosa. Jéssica Barbosa and her boyfriend, Dougla Benavides, at The Town Gustavo Honório/g1 From father to son Student João Victor Florentino inherited his taste for rock from his father. “I really like Foo Fighters’ songs, but I prefer Nirvana. Seeing Dave Grohl will be a dream come true. I was born in the wrong time,” he joked. (photo below) Washington Louidy, João’s uncle, was a drummer, but hasn’t played since 2005, when he was involved in a car accident. He swapped drumsticks for a pen and has composed more than 600 songs. He even gave a little piece of his favorite: “What’s the point in life if I don’t have you anymore, what’s the point in life, I’ve lost the reason for living.” Fans of Foo Fighters and Nirvana at The Town Gustavo Honório/g1 João Ricardo will also watch Foo Fighters for the first time – and with a special taste: “Very special too because I’m with my son. It’s the first show of his life”, he said the Information Technology professional. (photo below) Student João Gabriel, his father’s chará, said that expectations are high as it is his first time at an event the size of The Town. He doesn’t have a favorite band yet, but there’s a good chance that will change this Saturday night. Fans of Foo Fighters and Nirvana at The Town Gustavo Honório/g1 The couple Gustavo Resende and Sara Maleiner came from Brasília to see the North American band. She was wearing a Foo Fighters t-shirt. He only wore a Nirvana one because he couldn’t find one like the woman’s. (photo below) “We’re old enough to be Nirvana fans”, joked the public defender. “Seeing their show represents a lot. We came last year and had that problem [morte do baterista Taylor Hawkins]. It will be the first time seeing Foo Fighters”, he said. Fans of Foo Fighters and Nirvana at The Town Gustavo Honório/g1 At The Town, Foo Fighters perform their first show at a festival in Brazil after the death of Taylor Hawkins; what will it be like? The Foo Fighters comes to Brazil for the first time since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, in March 2022. The band performs at The Town festival, this Saturday (9). Previously, they played in Curitiba, on Thursday (7). Josh Freese was selected for the current tour. The 50-year-old American musician has played in punk rock (Vandals) and new wave (Devo) bands. In addition to him, the new songs are the songs from the album “But here we are”, released in June this year. There are usually three per show, with “The Glass”, “Rescued”, “Under You” and “The Teacher” being the most popular. The rest of the setlist is made up of sounds that the audience knows well. “All My Life”, “The Pretender” and “Walk” usually open the performances. “Best of you” and “Everlong” are played at the end. First show of Foo Fighters’ 2023 tour, in New Hampshire, in the United States Disclosure/Scarlet Page What’s the new album like? “But Here We Are” (“We’re there in the activity”, very loosely translated) is Foo Fighter’s best album since 2011. Direct, right? Because the eleventh album from the band led by Dave Grohl is even more. The album released in June has simple lyrics about the band’s recent losses with a sound that proposes that good old “back to basics”. In the booklet, there is a dedication to him. But not just him. “For Virginia and Taylor” quotes Virginia Grohl, teacher and mother of Dave, who passed away last August. He takes over the drums on the recordings. It doesn’t hurt to remember that Dave was Nirvana’s drummer and played all the instruments in the studio versions of songs from the very beginning of Foo Fighters. An honest and raw album The band had already warned, through a statement, that this would be “the first chapter of a new life”. The idea, according to them, was to release an album with “a brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything the Foo Fighters endured in the last year”. “This is the sound of brothers taking refuge in the music that first brought them together 28 years ago, in a process that is as therapeutic as it is a continuation of life.” Who helps the band in this search for a less intricate sound than in the previous albums is precisely the guy who produced the previous albums. Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) is working with the band for the third time, after producing “Medicine at Midnight” (2021) and “Concrete and Gold” (2017). “But Here We Are” has 10 songs divided into 48 minutes. The beginning is with the crystal clear guitar of “Rescued”, the first single, released in April. “It happened so fast/ And then it’s over/ Are you thinking what I’m thinking?/ Is this happening now?”, screams the vocalist. The song is included in the package of songs that remind us of “Wasting Light”, an excellent album from 2011, a phase in which the band gave more value to melodies than the most recent works. As anticipated by the band, however, it is the first albums that most influence the sound of today. It could be a sport: listening to new Foo Fighters songs and trying to guess which old song sounds like each of them. “Under You”, about striving (in vain) to overcome trauma, is reminiscent of “Generator”. “Photos of us sharing music and cigarettes, that’s how I’ll always picture you,” Grohl sings. The longing for his drummer friend is the subject of other lyrics, such as the ballad “The Glass”: “I had a person I love / And so, I was left to live without him.” The album is full of moments that should move the band’s fans. “Show Me How”, for example, has Dave singing with his daughter: 17-year-old Violet. The duo’s vocal harmonizations enhance the somewhat generic dream pop arrangement. Another one that deviates a little from the script is “Hearing Voices”, one of the best on the album, with a touch of The Cure. In addition to Violet, the only appearance on the album, Dave is joined by bassist Nate Mendel, keyboardist Rami Jaffee and guitarists Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear. Anyone who has seen Foo Fighters shows knows that few bands perform such competent “classic” rock, live and in the studio. This, of course, appears on the album, especially in “The Teacher”. It’s 10 minutes that pass by quickly: it starts somber and whispered; then it explodes, like a more mature “Best of you”. “Try to do good with the air you have left / Counting every minute, living breath by breath”, teaches Dave. After losing two of the most important people in his life, verses like this are to be expected. Dave said this dozen songs are “a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship and family.” It’s also proof that Foo Fighters is still alive, without forgetting the losses that have shaken the band in recent months.
