An honest and raw album The band had already warned, through a statement, that this would be “the first chapter of a new life”. The idea, according to them, was to release an album with “a brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything the Foo Fighters endured in the last year”. “This is the sound of brothers taking refuge in the music that first brought them together 28 years ago, in a process that is as therapeutic as it is a continuation of life.” Who helps the band in this search for a less intricate sound than in the previous albums is precisely the guy who produced the previous albums. Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) is working with the band for the third time, after producing “Medicine at Midnight” (2021) and “Concrete and Gold” (2017). “But Here We Are” has 10 songs divided into 48 minutes. The beginning is with the crystal clear guitar of “Rescued”, the first single, released in April. “It happened so fast/ And then it’s over/ Are you thinking what I’m thinking?/ Is this happening now?”, screams the vocalist. The song is included in the package of songs that remind us of “Wasting Light”, an excellent album from 2011, a phase in which the band gave more value to melodies than the most recent works. As anticipated by the band, however, it is the first albums that most influence the sound of today. It could be a sport: listening to new Foo Fighters songs and trying to guess which old song sounds like each of them. “Under You”, about striving (in vain) to overcome trauma, is reminiscent of “Generator”. “Photos of us sharing music and cigarettes, that’s how I’ll always picture you,” Grohl sings. The longing for his drummer friend is the subject of other lyrics, such as the ballad “The Glass”: “I had a person I love / And so, I was left to live without him.” The album is full of moments that should move the band’s fans. “Show Me How”, for example, has Dave singing with his daughter: 17-year-old Violet. The duo’s vocal harmonizations enhance the somewhat generic dream pop arrangement. Another one that deviates a little from the script is “Hearing Voices”, one of the best on the album, with a touch of The Cure. In addition to Violet, the only appearance on the album, Dave is joined by bassist Nate Mendel, keyboardist Rami Jaffee and guitarists Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear. Anyone who has seen Foo Fighters shows knows that few bands perform such competent “classic” rock, live and in the studio. This, of course, appears on the album, especially in “The Teacher”. It’s 10 minutes that pass by quickly: it starts somber and whispered; then it explodes, like a more mature “Best of you”. “Try to do good with the air you have left / Counting every minute, living breath by breath”, teaches Dave. After losing two of the most important people in his life, verses like this are to be expected. Dave said this dozen songs are “a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship and family.” It’s also proof that Foo Fighters is still alive, without forgetting the losses that have shaken the band in recent months.
