The mystery of Brahma Double Malt, dark version – 03/23/2023 – Full Glass

Some things appear and disappear leaving few clues and a trail of doubts, such as the ending of “Lost”, the use of VAR in Brazilian football or the whereabouts of Brahma Duplo Malte Escura.

In the case of this last mystery, the blog Copo Cheio made a point of unraveling it after a thorough investigation (kinda superficial, actually).

Launched in 2020, Duplo Malte original is a great success for the brand, which belongs to the Ambev group. It was a smart move, launching a double malt at a time when everyone was talking about pure malt as a symbol of quality, which is not necessarily true (the famous Budweiser, from the same Ambev, was never pure malt, for example). Soon, Brahma thought of a way to extend the good performance, creating the dark version two years later.

In September 2022, in the middle of Festa do Peão de Barretos, singer Gusttavo Lima (who has his own drink, and which has nothing to do with beer) announced the news to the public. Even without being a lover of country music, this scribe / blogger was happy with the news as he is a fan of stouts, porters, dark lagers and practically all styles made with roasted malts. However, weeks passed and the beer never physically appeared in the nearest market, or another half way away.

According to Ambev’s promotional material, sent to this blog in September, “Brahma Double Dark Malt has all the attributes of its traditional recipe. Only this time, the traditional Pilsner malt arrives accompanied by dark malt, bringing a unique flavor for the drink, with a roasted flavor profile”.

It also said that the beer came out in limited edition, and could be found “at the main points of sale in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Paraná and Santa Catarina”, in addition to Zé Delivery and the ecommerce Empório da Cerveja.

This beer-blogger was depressed because he found that he doesn’t know any of the “main points of sale in the state”, since he never came across the 350 ml can of beer.

One or another friend from Paraná or Santa Catarina also did not see such a dark version in their “main points of sale”. A friend from Blumenau, the capital of beer, even asked, “Does this really exist?”

Faced with the possibility that it is an urban brewing legend, this blog sought answers directly from the source, Ambev, in February. But questions such as “where the beer was physically released” or whether “it was still available anywhere” were left unanswered. The company also did not provide any numbers that could measure the outcome of the beer.

So the alternative was to get the beer online, where it couldn’t hide. And finally, Brahma Double Malt Dark was found (woo). Better yet, as it’s close to the expiration date (April 1st, known as April Fool’s Day), Empório da Cerveja is selling the pack with eight cans at a 60% discount (uhu double dark).

The beer is a dark lager with 4.7% alcohol content, like the original Duplo Malte, and with 9 IBU (very little bitterness). IBU is a unit of bitterness that goes over a hundred on the scale. It’s an honest beer, especially considering the low price (60% off).

It is unknown if she will have a new batch this year or if she will never return, which could happen according to her acceptance. Perhaps it was a success and ended up quickly on shelves, which would explain the reason for its disappearance… or not.

But if the consumer wants to try other dark lagers, there is no need to fear. They exist. The Peruvian Cusqueña sells one with good cost-benefit. Its version has 5.6% alcohol and can also be found on the Empório da Cerveja website. Other mainstream breweries have their dark versions.

However, if you want to taste an excellent dark lager, the suggestion is to look for an artisanal example, such as Cerveja Avós, a specialist in lagers and with a bar in the west of the city (r. Croata, 703, Vila Ipojuca); or also Koala San Brew, like Principia; or ask for a suggestion at the nearest craft brewery.
